Modern and Contemporary Authors

The class will be reading and discussing The Underground Railroad, a novel by Colson Whitehead, published in August 2016 by Doubleday, ISBN 978-0-385-54236-4.

This 2016 National Book Award winner chronicles a young slave's adventures as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. Like the protagonist of Gulliver’s Travels, she encounters different worlds at each stage of her journey — hers is an odyssey through time as well as space. Whitehead says his core inspiration was “What if the underground railroad was a literal railroad? And what if each state, as a runaway slave was going north, was a different state of American possibility, an alternative America?”
